Plan your trips in advance and order cheap 1st class tickets.

@carlplage: British Rail? That was the most efficient rail service around until it was carved up, privatised and left to its own devices. It got worse after that

Yes I know it was efficient, some services are ok but it's been a while since I used a train. 18 months ago and then that was First Hull Trains 1st class to London from Hull for work.

@danlane: Last week I checked the price of a return to Liverpool from Bath in 5 weeks -- it was over £160, and that was cattle class! :-o

Ouch that is bloody expensive :(

@carlplage: And I'd still not be guaranteed a bloody seat! Really peed me off to work out that it would only cost about £60 to drive (while wrecking the planet).

Rail travel in this country needs to drop it's price by 70% of it's current prices to be an affordable alternative.

How about half the current price for a ticket and (if you book more than a few days in advance) a further 20% refund if there's no seat available?

The cost of some of the routes is astronomical. Yes half current price with a seat guaranteed would be affordable.
